How to Make Your Message Stick

Meridith Grundei

Yesterday, in the United States, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a leader whose words transcended borders and inspired generations.

Martin Luther King Jr.

His "I Have a Dream" speech wasn’t just a call for justice—it was a masterclass in connection, vision, and hope.

So, I thought it would be fun to explore what made his message so impactful and what you can all learn from his brilliance as communicators and changemakers.

When was the last time you listened to Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech? Not just read the words, but really sat down and listened?

I did recently, and it is rhythmic, emotional, passionate, inspiring, convincing and unifying.

Dr. King delivered that speech over 60 years ago, but it still resonates.

Why?

Because it wasn’t just a speech—it was an experience. He made us feel something. He connected with both the hearts and minds of his audience. And, maybe most importantly, he gave us a vision to believe in.

So, what can you, as speakers, leader, and storyteller, learn from this?

Here are a few lessons I feel you can take from his brilliance:

  • Paint a Vision They Can See

Dr. King didn’t just tell us about equality; he showed us what it could look like. "I have a dream that one day..." His words painted pictures so vivid, you could see that world in your mind.

Takeaway for us: When presenting your ideas, don’t just explain—show. Use metaphors, stories, and imagery to make your message stick.

  • Be Unapologetically Human

His speech wasn’t perfect in the traditional sense. It wasn’t overly rehearsed or robotic. In fact, much of the iconic “I have a dream” section wasn’t in his original script. He pivoted in the moment, connecting deeply with his audience.

Takeaway for us: Be flexible. Be present. Your imperfections and authenticity are often what people will remember most.

  • Speak With Purpose

Dr. King didn’t talk just to hear himself speak—every word carried weight. He had a clear message: equality, freedom, justice. And he delivered it with unwavering conviction.

Takeaway for us: Know your why. Why are you speaking? What do you want your audience to feel, know, or do when you’re done? Get clear on that first, and let it guide everything else.

  • Invite Your Audience Into the Dream

Dr. King’s speech wasn’t just about him. It was about all of us. He spoke with his audience, not at them.

Takeaway for you: Instead of thinking of your presentation as a monologue, make it a conversation—even if you’re the only one speaking. Create connection by acknowledging their role in the vision you’re sharing.

Listening to this speech again reminded me that the best presentations aren’t just about delivering information; they’re about transformation. Dr. King didn’t just inform—he inspired action, hope, and change.

What if we all approached our talks, presentations, or even day-to-day communication like that?

If you want to create memorable, impactful, and yes—dream-worthy—presentations, let’s talk. I’d love to help you turn your big ideas into moments that move people.✨
